Seedance 2.5: what it is, what changed, and where you can use it

Seedance 2.5 is ByteDance's video model, released on 31 July 2026: 30-second clips with sound made in one pass, up to 50 references, and edits to one moment of a clip without remaking it. This page sets out what changed from Seedance 2.0, where you can run it as of October 2026, and why the same model gives different results on different platforms.

Seedance 2.5 has been out since 31 July 2026

Seedance 2.5 is the video model from ByteDance’s Seed team. Its launch post, published on 31 July 2026, calls it “the new-generation video creation model”. It builds on Seedance 2.0, which ByteDance released on 12 February 2026, and keeps that model’s main idea: picture and sound made together in one pass, not sound added afterwards.

If you’ve searched for it, you may have found pages saying it’s “coming soon” or “not yet released”. They were written before launch and never updated. As of 8 October 2026 it’s live in ByteDance’s own apps, in Dreamina and CapCut, on Higgsfield, and through developer platforms such as fal.

ByteDance’s launch post focuses on three things: longer single takes, much richer references, and editing a clip in place. It’s also open about what still goes wrong, which we come back to below.

A long painted storyboard on a dark studio wall showing a woman in a red coat walking through rain into a warm cafe, beside a cork board of reference photos, fabric swatches and a clay model of the cafe under a desk lamp
Made with Nano Banana 2 for this article. Prompt: "A long storyboard pinned across a dark studio wall: thirty small hand-painted frames in a single row showing one continuous scene, a woman in a red coat walking from a rainy street into a warm cafe, joined by a thin painted line. Beside it, a cork board of reference photos, fabric swatches and a small clay model of the cafe lit by a desk lamp. Moody tungsten light, shallow depth of field, 35mm lens, cinematic and quiet. No text, no letters, no logos, no screens."

What changed from Seedance 2.0

Both columns come from ByteDance’s own launch posts (12 February and 31 July 2026).

Seedance 2.0 Seedance 2.5
One generation 15 seconds, multi-shot Up to 30 seconds, multi-shot
Longer videos Not described Several rounds of extension, to “several minutes”
References at once Up to 9 images, 3 video clips, 3 audio clips Up to 30 images, 10 video clips, 10 audio clips
Sound Made with the picture Made with the picture
Editing Not described Timestamp-level edits, green screen, camera perspective and reference-based editing

The changes that matter most to people making things:

  • Twice the length in one take. A 30-second ad, or a whole story beat, can now be one generation rather than two clips joined in an editor. ByteDance also says it improved shot transitions and scene changes within that take.
  • More kinds of reference. Beyond faces and places, the launch post describes clay render references (a rough 3D model of a scene) that set the lighting’s direction, colour temperature, intensity and shadows, plus motion references and creative references.
  • Fix one moment. Timestamp-level editing means you can change part of a clip without remaking the rest. Higgsfield’s version of this is a region edit: describe the fix and only that area is repainted.
  • Fewer surprises. ByteDance says 2.5 adds fewer unwanted subtitles and less unwanted background music, and improves skin, eyes, texture and lighting.

ByteDance doesn’t publish its own resolution figure for either model, which is part of why the next section matters.

Where you can use Seedance 2.5, as of October 2026

Every platform below says what it offers on its own pages. They don’t all offer the same thing.

Where What it says it offers Good to know
Jimeng AI and Doubao Pro (ByteDance) Where ByteDance began the rollout, on 31 July 2026 ByteDance’s own apps
Dreamina Up to 30 seconds, a beta long-video mode up to 180 seconds, up to 50 references, advertised 4K Says it’s “officially live worldwide”, with free daily credits to try it
CapCut Up to 30 seconds, up to 50 references, edits at specific timestamps At launch, for subscribers over 16 in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America; the US isn’t listed
Higgsfield Up to 30 seconds, 480p, 720p or 1080p with 4K upscaling, up to 50 references Adds its own tools: region edit, shot re-generate, Draw to Video, Extend, Transition and Reverse
fal (for developers) 4 to 30 seconds at 480p or 720p, 24 frames a second Separate text, image (with optional end frame) and reference endpoints
BytePlus ModelArk (for developers) ByteDance’s own cloud At launch the API was “coming soon”; ModelArk’s Seedance 2.5 tutorial and prompt guide were last updated on 28 September 2026

Three practical points:

  • Resolution is a platform choice. If you need 1080p or 4K delivery, check the platform before the model. Higgsfield’s guide (6 August 2026) says its 4K is upscaled from what the model makes.
  • Extension is a platform feature too. Dreamina’s 180-second mode and Higgsfield’s Extend are each platform’s own way of going past 30 seconds, and they won’t behave identically.
  • Access isn’t always on the cheapest plan. Plans and credits change often, so see Dreamina’s, CapCut’s and Higgsfield’s pricing pages on the day, not a figure in an article.

If you make video on Higgsfield, we run its whole catalogue, Seedance included, through your own Higgsfield account, from the same screen as your pictures (see how it works).

How to get good results from it

Most of this comes from fal’s Seedance 2.5 guide (12 August 2026), which is unusually specific, plus ByteDance’s own notes.

  1. Write the 30 seconds as beats, with times. Timestamps in the prompt set the order and pacing of shots. fal is honest that they set proportion, not exact frames: if something has to land on a precise frame, that’s a job for your editor.
  2. Put dialogue in double quotes. fal says quoted lines come out as lip-synced speech.
  3. Use the references you already have. A character sheet, a product shot, a location and a voice clip can all go in one generation. On fal, video and audio references are each capped at about 30 seconds in total, and an audio reference needs at least one picture or video with it.
  4. Make the end frame from the start frame. For image to video with an end frame, fal recommends editing your first frame into your last, not generating a fresh picture, so the two match.
  5. Name what must stay when you edit. When you edit a clip, the sound is regenerated with the picture, so say which sounds should be kept.

What it still gets wrong

ByteDance’s launch post says plainly that “there is still room for improvement”, naming two areas: the physical plausibility of complex motion, and stability in scenes where several subjects interact. In practice that points to fights, dance, sport, crowds and anything with hands passing objects. Expect more retries there, and use timestamp edits to fix one moment rather than rerolling the whole 30 seconds.

There are rules to know about too. CapCut’s announcement (31 July 2026) says its Seedance 2.5 videos carry invisible watermarks, C2PA Content Credentials and visible AI labels, and that unauthorised use of someone’s likeness is blocked by its policies. Check each platform’s terms before using real people or brands.

Longer clips and 50 references also mean more to keep track of: the final cut, the references that made it, the takes you nearly used. Wherever you run it, download what you keep. A library that holds clips from every platform in one place, named, dated and marked with the model, is what we built BosOn’s library for. If you’re comparing models before committing, our explainer on Kling 4.0 covers the other 30-second model announced this autumn.

Questions people also ask

When was Seedance 2.5 released?

ByteDance's Seed team released Seedance 2.5 on 31 July 2026, in a post on its own blog. It rolled out first in ByteDance's Jimeng AI and Doubao Pro apps, with Dreamina and CapCut announcing it the same day; Higgsfield and fal both had it by mid August 2026.

How long can a Seedance 2.5 video be?

Up to 30 seconds in a single generation, twice Seedance 2.0's 15 seconds. ByteDance says several rounds of extension can take a video to several minutes, and Dreamina offers a beta long-video mode of up to 180 seconds.

How many references can Seedance 2.5 use?

Up to 50 in one generation: up to 30 images, 10 video clips and 10 audio clips, according to ByteDance's launch post. On fal, video and audio references are each capped at about 30 seconds in total, and audio references need at least one image or video alongside them.

Is Seedance 2.5 4K?

It depends where you run it. As of October 2026, Higgsfield says the model generates at 480p, 720p or 1080p with optional 4K upscaling, fal offers 480p and 720p, and Dreamina advertises 4K output. ByteDance's launch post gives no resolution.

Is Seedance 2.5 available in the US?

Not clearly through CapCut: its 31 July 2026 announcement lists Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America for subscribers over 16. Dreamina's Seedance 2.5 page says it is live worldwide, and Higgsfield and fal offer it to their users without a regional limit stated.
